Artist Statement

I communicate the message of therapeutic touch in my artworks. Adults come close and touch my construction silicone works of art. This primal experience goes back to early child development when all of us interact with the outside world primarily through the senses of sight and touch. By drawing attention to these senses, it develops the essential fundamentals of the child’s cognizance and means to communicate with the environment and build relationships with other human beings. I recreate now this primal, sensory experience for adults by inviting them to touch my silicone art. I have been searching for a long time to create a way for adults to re-experience the basic human instincts of early childhood. Adults can approach and touch my silicone artworks in a very calm and natural way. My original technique makes use of construction silicone, and it is applied to canvas making a painting of 3-dimensional form with a variety of soft textures to be touched by viewers. There is also a strong healing impact on physically disabled individuals who must sometimes overcome resistance to reach out and touch my paintings. It also opens the opportunity for autistic individuals to touch my artworks in a safe and calming environment. The visually challenged viewers too can freely enjoy my art through touch. My touchable 3-dimensional artworks are accessible for all.

Biography

Agnieszka Gzyl is a Polish artist whose construction silicone artworks on canvas offer therapeutic healing to the observer through the senses of sight and touch. Born in 1972 in Warsaw, she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Władysław Strzeminski in Lodz, Poland with a master’s degree, and later a doctorate. Besides Agnieszka’s specialty in creating touchable artworks with the likeness of 3-dimensional objects, she also applies healing principles to interior architecture. Upon living in both Milan and Paris, she has associated with Europe’s most talented artists including connections with psychologists and psychiatrists. The rich experience has motivated her to create the healing dynamics and relations in the construction silicone works. Agnieszka has exhibited in over 40 exhibitions in Italy, France, Poland, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She has recently opened her own center of art known as the SLOW Art Center in Poland. The art center creates a meditative and healing environment and hosts artists from all around the world as well as international tourists. They can relax in the atmosphere of paintings, sculptures, design and be surrounded by musicians, poets, writers on the grounds of a unique 100-year old villa at the heart of the SLOW Art Center.
