I first came across the word "edutainment" during my Harvard research in the use of Augmented Reality (AR) by the Museums. It struck me as an apt and funny term for this phenomenon. The AR is becoming increasingly popular with art institutions, especially during the lockdowns, when physical interaction with artworks is not possible. The pandemic is not the only reason for the trend. The interest in using AR by the museums and galleries has been on the rise pre-COVID, with the developing technologies and iPhone/Android usage growth worldwide.
The New Met Museum experience created in partnership with Verizon is called "TheMetUnframed." Here is a good overview of it by the Artnet writer Ben Davis. I found it informative and amusing. Enjoy.
